MONCTON, N.B. – A highly anticipated Moncton museum slated to open last year will be open to the public Friday.

‘Resurgo Place’ – named after Moncton’s motto, Latin for ‘I rise again’ – will be the new home of the Moncton Museum, the Transportation Discovery Centre and the main Moncton Visitor Information Centre.

“You’re going to see people flocking to the museum and doing more than just looking,” said Lourdes O’Reully, President of the Greater Moncton Museum Society. “They’re going to be doing a lot of research too about the history of Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview.”

The new 31,000 square foot facility includes galleries, an interactive exhibition focusing on different modes of transportation, an education centre, a gift shop, a research centre, a small cafe and an indoor public area.

The opening was delayed because of extra work needed to upgrade the old building and parking lot. This increased the cost from $9-million to $10-million.

The city spent about $7-million on the centre. The provincial and federal governments also contributed just over $1-million and the residents of Greater Moncton donated $1.3-million.

“When the community puts their money behind a project like this and sees the vision early on, you know you’re on the right track,” said Catherine Dallaire, General Manager of Tourism and Culture for the city of Moncton.

“It was important for us to expand and renew the exhibits in the existing museum, but also in respect to the Transportation Discovery Centre, it was important to capture that history in a more innovative and exciting way and interactive way,” said Brenda Orr, Senior Heritage Officer with the city of Moncton.
